Pet Wellness Care
Wellness Programs at Chowan Animal Hospital
We offer a progressive new approach to veterinary care. Our Wellness Program embraces a focus on preventative medicine based on the specific life-stage of your pet. Each patient is assessed individually based on factors such as species, breed, age, and environmental challenges. Next we offer recommendations for prevention, nutrition, and diagnostic work-ups appropriate for your pet.
The key to our Wellness Program is an emphasis on the biannual or annual health examination. Each time when your pet comes in he or she will receive a comprehensive physical exam and age appropriate ancillary diagnostics (such as heartworm tests, parasite tests and blood work) to screen for early signs of disease.
Our role is to educate you on those procedures and medications especially beneficial for your pet. This allows us to be more flexible with our recommendations, and gives you more control of your pets' healthcare.
Please contact us for more information or to enroll your pet in our Wellness Program.
Permanent Identification with Microchipping
Tags may scratch or fade and collars can come off, so make sure your pet has permanent identification in case he or she is ever lost.
Similar to a routine vaccination, one of our technicians injects a microchip (around the size of a grain of rice) between your pet's shoulder blades. No anesthetic is required as the process doesn't really hurt.
If your pet is ever lost, any office or shelter with a ID scanner will wave it over your pet, read the unique ID, and you can be alerted that your pet has been found!
Yearly Exams are the key to your pet's health
Vaccines for your dog or cat
Vaccines that are due at the time of the annual exam will be determined based on the current risk assessment of your pet. Patients with health-related concerns will be recommended more advanced diagnostics when needed. More frequent re-evaluations will most-likely become necessary for those pets with ongoing illnesses.
CARE FOR SENIOR PETS AND A HEALTHY START FOR PUPPIES AND KITTENS
Puppies and kittens should meet their veterinarian as early as six weeks old. We want to set them on on the right path by checking for parasites and worms (and providing treatment), evaluate your new pet's overall health, provide proper guidance on diet and exercise for his or her age and breed, and begin their vaccine boosters for gradual disease immunity.
For our senior patients, we use the information from their past medical exams to make sure that he or she is also on the right nutrition, check weight and behaviors, as well as work with you to so that your pet is as healthy and happy as always.
